The other day I was riding my bike home from work, when out of nowhere I was hit by a truck. The driver had been drinking, and he immediately fled the scene. I tried to call for help, but my cell phone was completely crushed from the impact. On top of that, I had no identification or emergency contact information with me. Any other day, I would have been wearing my Road ID, but I happened to forget to wear it that day...go figure.
Thankfully, two cyclists stopped and were able to help me. I could not believe that they both were wearing Road IDs. I ended up in the emergency room at VA Hospital. I was lucky that day...my injuries were relatively minor...concussion, bruised ribs, wrenched shoulder and serious road rash...it could have been much worse.
I believe that wearing ID today is just as important as my dog tags were to me when I served in the Air Force. I will never again forget to take my Road ID with me when I ride, run, swim, hike or just leave my home to go somewhere, anywhere.
