I had just started out on a ride when I was rear-ended by a distracted driver in an SUV. When I came to on the pavement the paramedic was asking me questions and miraculously knew my name thanks to my Road ID. On the ambulance ride to the hospital the information on my Road ID made it possible for the EMT's to get in contact with my wife and let her know what had happened and where theywere taking me.
I don't remember crashing into the windshield and breaking my back but I do remember the terrifying feeling of coming to and not knowing what had happened. I was very lucky, things could have been much worse.
A year later I have a new bike and am back on the road, but I would no sooner head out without my Road ID than go without a helmet.
