I was out for a a pre-sunrise ride along the Chicago lakefront trail, properly attired for riding in the dark (lights, etc.) when another cyclist without any lights or illuminated clothing T-boned me. I flew out of my clipless pedals and landed in a way that bruised my spinal cord leaving me paralyzed from the neck down. Luckily, some Good Samaritans came to my assistance and found my phone, and my Road ID.When the ambulance came, the first reponders used the Road ID to get the information I was in no state to give them.
I'd started wearing it after a pulmonary embolism in 2008. Since I'm now on blood thinners for the rest of my life I wear the band 24 hours a day. It was a life saver that day.
